D-Day: June 6th 1944
D-Day also known as the Normandy Landings was an event near the end of the war. American, British, Canadian and Free French troops had landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate France from German rule and decrease Germany's control over Europe. The Allies, led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower met together and planned to land on the beaches and take out the German defenses in an operation code-named Operation Overlord. The Allies landed on 5 beaches on Tuesday, June 6th 1944 using amphibious vehicles taking out German defenses. There was a large amount of losses on both sides, the allies suffered 10,000 in losses while the German losses are unknown there were approximately 9,000 casualties. The number of US casualties is estimated at 2500, while the British troops lost a large part of their infantry. While a large portion of the infantry was gunned down during the operation, the allies had managed to gain control of the beaches and they moved up further through France. The allies, by securing Normandy, flew in reinforcements and moved up to Paris, the capital and take back France from Nazi rule. Overall the operation was called a success and was an important event in the history of the war. This taking back of France doomed Hitler's vision of Europe and allowed the Allies to gain a large portion of Europe back from the efforts made by troops on D-Day.
